Superman Returns!

I saw Superman yesterday, and as some of you may know, I'm a fan. I didn't have huge expectations for the movie, nor did it surpass them. Here are some of my thoughts on Superman Returns.

-Where did Superman get the spaceship to go to where Krypton was?

-It seems strange that Superman, who traditionally has been all-good, forsaking even his own health for the help of others, would abandon the human race for a full 5 years. People have criticized the Superman character for being "too perfect," and while faithful fans say that the genius of the Superman character lies in his ultimate weaknesses (Kryptonite, Lois Lane), this movie has put all debate to rest. Superman now has a selfish side that was never there before.

-What were the producers going for? One one hand we have the original score and cutscenes of Marlon Brando for authenticity, but on the other hand, Superman is a different person. He is most certainly not the Superman everyone has come to love.

-The plot is pretty thin. Superman returns after a 5 year hiatus, saves a couple of people here and there, evaluates his relationship with Lois Lane. Incidentally, this is around the same time Lex Luthor found the Fortress of Solitude and stole the crystals. Isn't that just a little too perfectly timed, even for a superhero movie?

-For a movie that's 2.5 hours long, I don't remember THAT many scenes with Brandon Routh, and even less with Kevin Spacey. It seems that Routh, both as Kent and Superman had very little dialogue. He didn't leave me with any impression, favourable or otherwise. Kal Penn has almost no role or purpose in this movie. Whoever plays Lois Lane is pretty dry as well, totally lacking punch in a characterization that absolutely needs it.

-In the scene where some guy in a bulletproof vest is firing this crazy spinning machine gun at people/stuff, Superman walks into the gunfire for a very cool effect, but I later wondered ... why the hell is that guy firing bullets for no reason? Who does that? How could that possibly benefit him in any way? That scene seems SO planted just to show off the Man of Steel!

-In the scene where there's a shuttle piggybacking on a Boeing 777, the plane looks NOTHING like a 777. You'd think they'd take care of details like this. The 777 model in MS Flight Simulator looks more accurate.

-I love the effects on Superman as he flies. They show moisture building around him as he crosses the sound barrier, and a sonic boom after he breaks it ... wicked cool!

-In the future, I hope someone does a Superman movie more in the style of Batman Begins.

Thats it for now, perhaps more later!
